Reason Your Diffuser Doesn’t smell and how to get stronger scent from reed diffuser
A few days ago, a customer told us something interesting.
She said she placed her diffuser on a shelf, waited a few minutes, and thought,
“Hmm… I can barely smell anything.”
Then the next morning she walked into the room and suddenly the space smelled incredible.
What changed?
Nothing was wrong with the diffuser.
The reeds simply needed time to draw the fragrance oil upward and begin releasing scent into the air.
Reed diffusers are quiet workers. They do their job slowly and steadily, but when used correctly they can transform the atmosphere of a room.
Here are a few simple tips to make reed diffuser smell stronger:
Give the reeds time to absorb the oil: When you first insert the reeds into the fragrance oil, they need time to draw the oil upward through tiny channels inside the reeds. This process is called capillary action.
Allow the reeds to absorb the oil for about 30 to 60 minutes, then flip them once to start the scent diffusion. Within 12 to 24 hours, the fragrance will reach its full performance.
The number of reeds controls the scent strength: The more reeds you use, the more fragrance is released into the air. For a lighter scent, use fewer reeds, for a stronger scent, add more reeds. Small rooms may only need 3–4 reeds, while larger spaces may benefit from 6–8 reeds.
Placement matters more than you think: Reed diffusers perform best where there is gentle airflow.
Good locations include:
Entryways
Coffee tables
Hallways
Living rooms
Air movement helps carry the fragrance throughout the space. Avoid placing diffusers directly under strong vents or fans, as this can cause the oil to evaporate too quickly.
Refresh the scent by flipping the reeds: Over time the exposed ends of the reeds dry slightly. Flipping the reeds refreshes the fragrance. For most homes, flipping the reeds once or twice per week is enough to keep the scent fresh. Flipping more often will create a stronger scent but will also cause the oil to be used faster.
Your nose adapts to scent: One interesting thing about fragrance is that our noses quickly adapt to it. This is called olfactory adaptation. You may stop noticing the scent after a while, but guests entering the room will often smell it immediately.
A final note from Mishkan
At Mishkan, we believe scent is more than fragrance. It shapes how a space feels. A peaceful home, a welcoming entryway, a moment of calm after a long day.
That is why we carefully craft our reed diffusers to create a steady, elegant scent experience that gently fills your space.
When used well, a diffuser quietly transforms a room. And sometimes, the difference between a faint scent and a beautiful one is simply knowing how to let it work.
